glacier planeKahiltna Take Off

The Kahiltna Glacier is one of the most incredible staging areas in all of Alaska. The base camp for mountains like Denali, Foraker, and Mt. Hunter the Kahiltna Camp is accessed only by aircraft, usually small fixed winged planes. Pilots generally land going up glacier and take off headed down glacier on runways that constantly need to be packed down and probed for crevasses.

In this photo a DeHaverhill Beaver is taking off while Mt. Foraker's massive flanks dominate the background. Perspective is difficult to gauge in a photo like this, the wall in the distance is over a mile away from the plane.

A Walk in the Clouds

Two climbers descend toward Denali's Motorcycle Hill; a trek marked by windswept ridges, deep crevasses, and the stark, far flung beauty unique to Earth's wild places.

Mt. Hunter's Moonflower Buttress

A dominant feature on the east fork of the Kahiltna Glacier the Moonflower Buttress defines the north side of Mount Hunter. Though many of the world's best attempted to ascend the Moonflower it remained unclimbed until the 1980's. It remains one of the most formidable climbs in the Alaska Range.

This photo taken in early May depicts the rock in a fairly lean state.

Mount Foraker at Sunset

The natives knew Foraker as Sultana, or loosely, The Wife of the Great One (Denali being the Great One). I find a peace in this photo, a taste of the tranquility that exists in those minutes of half light, when the world knows neither day nor night, only stillness.

Sunrise

We waited and waited for the storm to blow itself out. After two days the ceiling lifted enough to make a dash for the base of Mt. Barrill. Following a sustained push that started at 11pm my climbing partner Michael Schwicht and I stood on the summit watching the sun rise over the Alaska Range.

Mountains and Crevasses

The Ruth Glacier carves the terrain between some of the most magnificent mountains in the world. Partner to the mountains are the crevasses that score the glacier to unexplored depths. Both present unique hazards to the adventurer.
